FRAGTURA
letterpress
2016
This letter machine and font were designed by deconstructing the elements of classical fraktur fonts. Picking apart the different elements that make the fraktur letters so recognisable and re-making them as individual elements for building new letters. The project consists of a hand-made metal frame, wooden blocks, black ink and a pressing plate. When used correctly, the system functions as a small portable letterpress. The resulting letter depends on the one operating the press.
The frame is accompanied by a small book consisting custom letters made by friends and teachers, showcasing the variety of possibilities with a small set of basic shapes.
